    Effect of cation size variance on spin and orbital order in Eu1x_{1-x}(La0.254_{0.254}Y0.746_{0.746})x_{x}VO3_3

    We have investigated the RR-ion (RR = rare earth or Y) size variance effect on spin/orbital order in Eu1x_{1-x}(La0.254_{0.254}Y0.746_{0.746})x_{x}VO3_3. The size variance disturbs one-dimensional orbital correlation in CC-type spin/GG-type orbital ordered states and suppresses this spin/orbital order. In contrast, it stabilizes the other spin/orbital order. The results of neutron and resonant X-ray scattering denote that in the other ordered phase, the spin/orbital patterns are GG-type/CC-type, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Rapid Communication in Physical Review

    Observation of the decay mode K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^-

    We report on results of an experimental search for the K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- decay mode. We found 13.5 +- 4.0 events and determined its branching ratio to be (4.4 +- 1.3(stat) +- 0.5(syst))*10^{-7}.     We report on results of a search for the decay mode K_L -> pi^0 gamma e^+ e^- conducted by the E162 experiment at KEK. We observed no events and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of Br(K_L -> pi^0 gamma e^+ e^-)< 7.1x10^{-7} for its branching ratio.     Detecting subgroups in social participation among individuals living with spinal cord injury:a longitudinal analysis of community survey data

    STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal community survey. OBJECTIVES: To determine subgroups in social participation of individuals living with spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING: Community. METHODS: Data were collected in 2012 and 2017 as part of the community survey of the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury cohort. Participation was assessed using the 33-item Utrecht Scale of Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation evaluating frequency of, restrictions in and satisfaction with productive, leisure, and social activities. Linear mixed-effects model trees were used to distinguish subgroups in participation associated with sociodemographic and lesion characteristics. RESULTS: In all, 3079 observations were used for the analysis, of which 1549 originated from Survey 2012, 1530 from Survey 2017, and 761 from both surveys. Participants were mostly male (2012: 71.5%; 2017: 71.2%), aged on average 50 years (2012: 52.3; 2017: 56.5), with an incomplete paraplegia (2012: 37.5%; 2017: 41.8%) of traumatic origin (2012: 84.7%; 2017: 79.3%). There was limited within-person variation in participation over the 5-year period. Participation varied with age, SCI severity, education, financial strain, number of self-reported health conditions (SHCs), and disability pension level. Among modifiable parameters, the number of SHCs and disability pension level emerged as the most frequent partitioning variables, while education was most informative for participation in productive, leisure, and social activities. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term rehabilitation management and clinical practice should target people most prone to decreased participation in major life domains. Our study indicates that the alleviation of SHCs, engagement in further education, or adjusting disability pension level are promising areas to improve participation of persons living with SCI

    Validation of the High Performance Conduction-Cooled Prototype LTS Pulse Coil for UPS-SMES

    A conduction-cooled low temperature superconducting (LTS) pulse coil has been developed as a key technology for UPS-SMES. We have been developing a 1 MW, 1 s UPS-SMES for a protection from a momentary voltage drop and an instant power failure. A conduction-cooled LTS pulse coil has excellent characteristics, which are adequate for a short-time uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The LTS coil has better cost performance over the HTS coil at present and the conduction cooling has higher reliability and easier operation than the conventional cooling schemes such as pool boiling with liquid helium or forced flow of supercritical helium. To demonstrate the high performances of the LTS pulse coil, we have fabricated a prototype coil with stored energy of 100 kJ and have conducted cooling and excitation tests.     Cone pigments in a North American marsupial, the opossum (Didelphis virginiana)

    Only two of the four cone opsin gene families found in vertebrates are represented in contemporary eutherian and marsupial species. Recent genetic studies of two species of South American marsupial detected the presence of representatives from two of the classes of cone opsin genes and the structures of these genes predicted cone pigments with respective peaks in the ultraviolet and long-wavelength portions of the spectrum. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), a profoundly nocturnal animal, is the only marsupial species found in North America. The prospects for cone-based vision in this species were examined through recordings of the electroretinogram (ERG), a commonly examined retinal response to photic stimulation. Recorded under flickering-light conditions that elicit signals from cone photoreceptors, the spectral sensitivity of the opossum eye is well accounted for by contributions from the presence of a single cone pigment having peak absorption at 561–562 nm. A series of additional experiments that employed various chromatic adaptation paradigms were conducted in a search for possible contributions from a second (short-wavelength sensitive) cone pigment.
